3. TOO YOUNG TO KNOW BETTER

One evening, in the middle of the ordinary conversation, he suddenly asked, “Are you a virgin?”

I froze. For a few seconds, I couldn’t even understand, what I had just read. No one had ever asked me something so personal before. I didn’t know whether I should answer, ignore it, or simply leave it.

I was only fourteen. He was two years older than me.

Too young to understand between right and wrong.

Between curiosity and disrespect.

I nervously replied, “No.”

The three-dot appeared as he was typing something, “How can anyone still be a virgin in today’s world?”

I didn’t know what to think or do. His words confused me more than they hurt me. Maybe I was too young to understand or he was too young to know the meaning of what he had asked.

So, I texted him back, “why?? Are you not a virgin?”

He simply replied as if it was not a big question to him, “I am.”

Something inside me didn’t feel right. I asked my cousin whether it was normal for someone to ask a question like that.

She casually told me that people asked such thing these days.  So, I convinced myself that maybe, I was just overthinking.

“Sometimes we don’t ignore red flags because we can’t see them. We ignore them because we are not ready to be someone we like could hurt us.”
